💸 How To Set A Budget For Your Italy Trip

"The best trips start with a well-planned budget."

Ciao Reader,

Many of you have recently asked about the cost of an off-the-beaten-path trip to Italy. So, I decided to make that the focus of this week's email.

💸 The most important step in your traveling planning is to set a budget.

You want your trip to be stress-free and that comes with designing a trip you can afford.

Let your budget guide your travel plans every step of the way.

Here are two different budget ranges for the average 1-week costs of a slow travel trip (NOT including airfare) for two people:

Mid-Range Trip: $2,500 - $4,000 per week

Accommodations:

  • Cost: $1,000 - $1,500
  • Type: Bed and breakfasts, agriturismos (farm stays), and small boutique hotels in countryside towns or less touristy cities.
  • Experience: Personalized service, comfortable rooms, local charm.

Transportation:

  • Cost: $300 - $500
  • Type: Mid-size car rental
  • Experience: Flexibility to explore scenic routes. Fuel costs would be an additional expense.

Dining:

  • Cost: $700 - $1,000
  • Type: Local trattorias, family-run restaurants, and occasional fine dining experiences.
  • Experience: Authentic Italian cuisine, regional specialties, and a mix of casual and slightly upscale dining.

Experiences and Activities:

  • Cost: $500 - $1,000
  • Type: Entry fees to historical sites, local wine tastings, cooking classes, and guided tours.
  • Experience: Immersive activities that offer a deeper connection to the local culture and traditions.

Luxury Trip: $6,000 - $10,000 per week

Accommodations:

  • Cost: $3,000 - $5,000
  • Type: Luxurious villas, historic palazzos, high-end boutique hotels and agriturismos.
  • Experience: Top-notch amenities, stunning views, exceptional service, and possibly private pools.

Transportation:

  • Cost: $600 - $1,000
  • Type: Premium car rental, such as a Mercedes or BMW.
  • Experience: Enhanced comfort and style for scenic drives.

Dining:

  • Cost: $1,500 - $2,000
  • Type: Michelin-star restaurants, gourmet dining experiences, and private chef dinners.
  • Experience: Exquisite meals, tailored dining experiences, and a focus on high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

Experiences and Activities:

  • Cost: $1,000 - $2,000
  • Type: Private tours, exclusive wine tastings, bespoke cooking classes, and unique cultural experiences such as private museum tours or special events.
  • Experience: VIP treatment, personalized itineraries, and access to unique activities that offer an unparalleled connection to the local culture.

Additional Considerations:

  • Flight Costs: Flights are not included in these weekly budget guidelines since flight costs can vary depending on your departure location and the time of year you plan to travel. So be sure to research the flight costs from your area and include that in your budget planning.
  • Fuel and Tolls: If renting a car, expect to spend around $200-$300 on fuel and tolls per week, depending on the distances traveled.
  • Travel Insurance: It's wise to budget for travel insurance to cover unexpected events. This can range from $100 to $300.

Once you've determined your budget and travel preferences you’ll want to:

  • Decide on the duration of your trip
  • Choose what time of year you’d like to visit (I have a helpful blog post for that)
  • Determine who you will be traveling with (you must consider it when choosing accommodations, transportation, and your itinerary, so everyone’s needs and interests are met).
